Bronx Innovation Factory
Economic Democracy Learning Center
Throughout my experience in the BCDI summer session, I was encouraged to develop my perspective on community and economic development. I learned how to better identify critical assets and development goals for building healthier and resilient communities. I gained a deeper appreciation of the role of the built environment in determining human health, economic opportunity and community dignity. Through my experience at BCDI, I came to understand the practice of urban planning as a tool for promoting economic democracy and for empowering communities to own and govern their own assets. Participatory planning is the rebuttal to processes of exclusion and tokenization, and a component of the larger movement for shared wealth building. —Bhavin Patel, Rutgers MPP/MUP ‘20
Anchor Engagement Manager
At BCDI, we put people first, starting with our staff. We intentionally develop the individual and collective leadership of our team members, and we practice transparency and collective decision-making wherever possible. We believe that people are our number-one asset and that the quality of our work directly reflects the people who lead it. Here are some reasons why people love working at BCDI:
"BCDI has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. Professionally since I exercise, sharpen and grow my skillset through my work. Personally because my perception of how Bronx economic resources are used has shifted. Working at BCDI feels right and overdue at the same time.” -Angel Farias
"BCDI is an incredibly energizing, dynamic, and engaging place to work. The diversity of projects means that everyone gets to experience, interact with, and learn from each other as we build and grow our work together.” -Evan Casper-Futterman
